Topologies, standards, transmission media and medium access control play an important role when constructing wired-LANS.  More importantly, the role played by medium access control in wired-LANS cannot be ignored.  In this aspect, CSMA/CD, slotted ring and control token have been widely adopted as medium access controls in wired-LANs.

(a)  Describe the principle operation of CSMA/CD and slotted ring.  

            

(b)  Describe the principle operation of control token and, with the aid of diagrams, explain how it may be used with both a bus and a ring network topology.
